The Kora Trust

Our projects take place with the support of the local community, whether in consultation with key community leaders such as the traditional head of the ‘quartier’, or with local government. Whenever possible we endeavour to co-ordinate our efforts with other charitable organisations working in the area.

Our focus is to support projects that are initiated by members of the local community.  There is a strong tradition of people working together; in particular women needing to generate income, e.g. in a market garden or in food production.  This co-operative approach is one we wholeheartedly support.

Projects are assessed on an individual basis but funds are not normally given to individuals, but to a group. Budgets and realistic time-frames for each project are agreed and the trust, in consultation with the community, will make the final decision on which projects should take priority dependent on the funds available.

Where appropriate, support can also be given in kind, with help from specialist professionals willing to donate their time, eg web designers, technicians and educational advisors.

Kath Pickering

Kath was born in 1964, has a BA (Hons) in Creative Sound and Music (2008) and is the co-founder of The Kora Workshop with her partner Adam Doughty.

She is the business manager of the Kora Workshop and spends six months in UK and France running workshops, sourcing materials for the building of koras and selling the finished instruments and accessories, including learning materials.  For the other six months she is in Kafountine, southern Senegal, where she and Adam have a home, welcoming kora students and holiday guests.  This 7 hectare piece of land is kept largely as wild bush and is now recognised as a Forest Reserve.
